Coming Soon - Sonic Flow
Sonic Flow confronts the persistently exploitative dynamics of the music industry by addressing its racialised, gendered economic structures and offering viable alternatives for musicians and other artists.
Today, platforms, tech companies and corporations dictate the terms of distribution, privacy and security are not respected as viable ethics, and value has been reduced to sales metrics, follower counts, clicks and other metrics that serve to quantify and commodify art and music. Meanwhile, the gendered/feminized reproductive labor of care work is deliberately invisibilized, despite being essential for the function of capitalism.
Sonic Flow addresses the root causes discussed above by combining technical and relational tools to form an economic system that returns ownership to all those involved in the creation, production, distribution and performance of music. The existing music platforms harvest and sell data, which we would explicitly avoid.
Sonic Flow is designed to function as an end2end, open source distributed streaming platform and player (using tech created for a now inactive project, Resonate), a record label, music marketplace and more, with user experience shaped by the community. It would equitably support the labor of producing live shows using bioregional materials for physical media production.
Sonic Flow will create a community forum for decisions guided by the people involved rather than operating on profit motives. We aim to integrate online and offline communities in a way that’s place-based, dedicated to supporting live performance crews, using music as a tool to gather people.
